Principal's
message
Truscott
Street Public School is a community school. It has a reputation of being a
welcoming school which provides strong academic, sporting and creative arts
programs balanced with an emphasis on student welfare. Within each student we
endeavour to instil an enthusiasm for learning, a pride in their accomplishment
and strong self-esteem.
Our
school believes that all students are unique and have special abilities, needs
and experiences and we celebrate the achievement of each student, parent and
staff member. This report exemplifies some of the many successes we’ve
commemorated throughout 2006.
As a school we value:
· the achievements of all staff and students;
· the individuality and capacity of all students to achieve their personal best;
· professional and dedicated teachers, committed to quality teaching and learning for all;
· a safe and positive learning environment;
· parents and the community as partners in providing support and resources.
We believe learning is most powerful when:
· students are extended and challenged in a supportive learning environment;
· students are motivated to create meaning through relevant, practical and engaging experiences;
· students are valued as individuals and are encouraged to develop to their potential as learners and citizens;
· all students and staff strive to achieve their personal best in academic, physical and interpersonal pursuits - and their success is celebrated;
· teachers use a variety of assessment types to inform teaching;
· there is mutual respect, trust and quality relationships among all members of the school community.
I certify that the information in
this report is the result of a rigorous school self-evaluation process and is a
balanced and genuine account of the school's achievements and areas for
development.

P&C
and School Council message
The traditional high degree
of participation by parents, caregivers and the wider community was evident in
2006 in all facets of school life.
The many roles (formal and
informal) that our school community undertook this year included:
·
P&C Association – President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary,
Uniform Shop, Canteen, Treasurer, Budget and Finance, Fundraising, OOSH (out of
school hours care) Band, Grounds, Publicity, Safety House, Class Parents and
Class Parent Co-ordinators.
·
School Council President
·
Classroom literacy and numeracy support
·
G.O.A.L. volunteer program for our Support Unit students which assists
them to get out and play at lunchtime.
·
Home reading program – parents continue to run and monitor this
successful program.
·
Reading resource room staffing, sports teams coaching, sports carnival
duties, canteen duties, band support and organisation, transport co-ordination,
costume making, special event gift-wrapping, lunch seating installation and so
much more.
With the ongoing concern of
the formal Support Unit class size review and potential adverse repercussions
of this, we were relieved to hear that Truscott Street had been taken off
review for 2006. We will await further developments that relate to this
important facet of our school as they happen.
The annual school-wide
parent survey continues to provide firstly confirmation of successful
school-community engagement, and secondly, areas for continued debate and
improvement.
On review of survey results
from the last few years, there is an extremely positive trend in parents
indicating greater connectivity with, and understanding of, school management
practices. Parent satisfaction is at an all-time high with parent agreement
averaging in the mid-90% range across many criteria. 100% of parents indicated that the school let
them know ‘what’s going on’ via the weekly and twice-termly newsletter system,
and 99% said they knew of the P&C meetings and that they could attend at
any time. Areas of school management and planning – such as distribution of resources
- that still show a degree of limited understanding from parents will be
addressed during the course of 2007.
The big infrastructure news
of the year was the completion of building works for our wonderful new library.
The entire community looks forward to an official opening ceremony and
associated literary activities for our students in the near future.

Captains
The captains
have had a great year. We have participated in many events and hosted many
functions.
This year we
have had five captains due to Bethany leaving for Canada at the end of term
two. Although it was sad to see her leave, Tamara was voted in as new Vice
Captain and Rhiannon was promoted to School Captain.
The first
event of the year was having breakfast at the Stamford Hotel with Mrs. Shannon
and our parents followed by a leadership day at school. We also attended
leadership camp where we learnt many leadership skills.
We’ve hosted
many occasions including the home link meeting, presentation day and the 2007
Captain speeches. We also were privileged to meet Mr John Watkins, Deputy
Premier and have a tour around Parliament House.
Bethany, Justin, Rhiannon, Jarrod and Tamara.
House Captains
Our Swimming Carnival was held at Epping Pool on the 7th of
February and we had the Athletics Carnival on the 9th of August at
Dunbar Park. We also had the Cross Country and the Walkathon/Wheelathon this
year. Everyone had a great time competing, cheering and supporting their colour
team.
As House Captains we were also privileged to go along and help the Support
Unit students at their carnivals. We loved helping push the wheel chairs as
well as seeing how much fun they have. They can be very fast on those hot
wheels.

Success for all.

Class sizes
In March 2003 the Government announced its commitment to publish primary class sizes in annual school reports in order to provide parents with as much local information as possible.
The following table shows our class sizes as reported at the 2006 class size audit conducted on Wednesday 29 March 2006.
Teachers work diligently to ensure each class is made up of students who will learn effectively together.
